Schmear’s Verdict: Matthew Rankin’s Universal Language is a quirky, visually captivating film that blends absurdity and heartfelt warmth, offering a uniquely Canadian yet universal exploration of community and connection.

Watch if you like: Persepolis, Playtime, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Lost in Translation

It felt right that my first film of TIFF was a Canadian one—Matthew Rankin's Universal Language, Canada's submission for Best International Feature at next year’s Oscars. The film feels cozy and familiar, yet entirely distinct.
