Spoilers ahead for Deadpool & Wolverine
It’s been 5 years since Avengers: Endgame and 5 years since Martin Scorsese penned his inflammatory NYT Op-Ed “I Said Marvel Movies Aren’t Cinema. Let Me Explain.” Marty got violently jumped for this, like wise guys in his own patent gangster movies would, but nothing I’ve seen since, especially not Deadpool & Wolverine, has done anything to dispel his notion. In fact, I think we’ve hit a creative nadir with this most recent film.
When Deadpool graced the big screen in 2016, he was crass, cheeky, ironic, and eye-poking. As Marvel pushed seriously and earnestly towards its Avengers-led conclusion, Deadpool was the subversive sideshow, picking up steam while laughing at the establishment. In the eerie parlance of that year’s election, he was the tantalizing 4-Chan message board, while Marvel was the stodgy, getting more stale New York Times…
